Man Dies After Plane Crashes During Takeoff
A pilot was killed on Wednesday after the plane the twin cargo engine plane that he was flying crashed at the Barnstable Municipal Airport during takeoff. He was the only one aboard the plane – which belonged to Wiggins Airways.
It crashed 500 feet down the runway. Officials temporarily closed down the airport after the crash while federal investigators tried to determine exactly what happened and what caused it to crash.
A spokeswoman for Wiggins Airways declined immediate comment. The Manchester, N.H.-based cargo carrier’s Web site says it owns and operates one DeHavilland C6 Twin Otter — the type that crashed — along with 11 other planes in support of United Parcel Service cargo deliveries. Wiggins also is a feeder operator for FedEx, operating 31 additional planes throughout the Northeast and Canada.
