This week a deer hunter was charged with manslaughter when one he accidentally shot a young baby while she was in her grandparents’ home in Hudson Valley. Authorities said that 45 year old Edward Taibi from New York City is now being held without bail and was charged with second degree murder.

According to reports Taibi was hunting from up in a tree on Sunday afternoon when he started to shoot a deer. He climbed down from the tree and fired using his .30 caliber rifle. He fired again while standing 400 feet away from the trailer home. The bullet missed and instead went through the trailer and hit 16 month old Charly Skala. She was flown to the Westchester Medical Center where she died.

State law prohibits any hunter to fire any type of weapon (guns, crossbows, etc.) when they are within 500 feet of a business or living space. The only time this does not apply is when the hunter owns the land that he is hunting on. Taibi claimed that he was a friend of the owner of the property next to the one that he was on and that he had hunted there before.
