Fight Breaks Out In Sadr City After Ceasefire Was Signed
11 people have been killed and 20 injured after a fight broke out between U.S. troops and militiamen in Baghdad’s Sadr City. The fight broke out hours after the ceasefire deal had been signed between Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr and the Iraqi government.
The fight began while the U.S. military was finishing the building of the barrier that was designed by the military in order to keep out members of the Mehdi Army from the southern area of Sadr City.
A spokesman for US forces said troops had responded to several attacks by militiamen with precision strikes. Two fighters, he said, were killed in a Hellfire missile strike by an attack aircraft, while they were planting a bomb targeting security forces. A third was shot dead while trying to set up yet another road bomb. The other attacks were stopped through the use of tanks and aircraft.
