A construction worker was killed this week after falling 48 storied at a Manhattan construction site. Fire workers said that the man was working with a crew to dismantle a crane when he lost his footing. He stumbled from a walkway between the crane and the building.

Witnesses say they saw the man fall in a construction lot that was surrounded by a fence. The authorities placed his body in an ambulance. He was working on a glass-walled skyscraper between the 41st and 42nd streets and 10th and 11th avenues in Midtown Manhattan.

More than 20 people have died in New York City construction accidents this year, including nine in two crane collapses. A window worker died last week after falling 12 stories from a Manhattan building.

It is no surprise to anyone when there are dozens if not hundreds of sharks off a beach on either the east or west coast. Many fear to swim near these ‘could-be’ dangerous beaches for this reason. However, no one was expecting to spot a shark in Lake Michigan.

Richi Fasi from Traverse City told authorities that he found a 2 foot shark in the water while trying to fish on the West Grand Traverse Bay this week. He said that the shark was dead and did not pose a threat to him.

Mark Tonello - a fisheries biologist from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - said that the shark was a young adult blacktip.

He said that it was possible that someone caught the shark off the Atlantic Coast and left it on ice while it made its return trip to Michigan. Tonello also said that the shark could have been someone’s pet and was dumped into the lake when it died.

New storms have appeared on the radar. Ike and Josephine made their way to the west right as Hanna was making her way over the Bahamas. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said that Ike will strengthen into a category 2 hurricane before it hit’s the Bahamas, reaching winds of 110 mph. It could hit early next week.

Ike was already near hurricane strength today, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph as it swept across the open Atlantic 740 miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands. The intensifying storm activity follows Hurricane Gustav, which slammed into Louisiana near New Orleans on Monday.

Louisiana is in the middle of the path that Gustav - which is now a category 4 hurricane - is taking and many are afraid that it will become another Katrina and devastate the lands that are still in the middle of being rebuilt. However, this time the people are prepared.

The Mayor of New Orleans set up a mandatory evacuation Sunday in which the people in the West Bank were told to evacuate first. The evacuation had everyone out of their homes and making their way into a safe zone by noon.

Officials in the city have been keeping a very close eye on the route that Gustav is taking and how fast it is moving. The hurricane made its way into the Gulf of Mexico Sunday where it picked up speed and moved northwest at 17 mph. Its winds were up to 120 mph according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane-force winds extended 50 miles from the storm’s center. Its center was about 325 miles southeast of the Mississippi River’s mouth. It was projected to make landfall as early as Monday, and could bring a storm surge of up to 20 feet to the coast and rainfall totals of up to 15 inches.

At a press conference this afternoon, Nagin said the last buses will leave the city by 3 p.m., and that a dusk-to-dawn curfew would be in place for anyone who chose to remain. “Anybody who is on the street after the curfew kicks in will be arrested,” Nagin said. Although according to the mayor there have been only a handful of arrests so far, “We will have zero tolerance for looters. You will go directly to Angola prison, and God bless you when you go there.”

Nagin did not minimize the danger posed by Gustav: “Since we are on the wrong side of the storm, we should start to see tornado threats,” he said. “This is still a big, ugly storm. It’s still strong and I urge everyone to leave.” Those who choose to stay will be on thier own.

Archeologists discovered a golden wreath in an ancient city in the northern parts of Greece. The wreath - which is being described as ‘priceless’ was buried among human bones in a large copper vase. When first discovered workers believed it to be a land mine.

The University of Thessaloniki stated that the “astonishing” discovery was made during its excavations this week in the ruins of ancient Aigai. The city was the first capital of ancient Macedonia, where King Philip II — father of Alexander the Great — was assassinated.

Gold wreaths are in fact very rare and were often buried with royalty or nobles in ancient times. Yet, this find is unique and a bit of a mystery because it seems that the artifact was taken from the grave during the ancient time and reburied near the theatre and in the cities marketplace. Close to the place were Philip was stabbed to death. The reason for the move is unknown.

“This happened quite soon after the original burial; it’s not that a grave robber took it centuries later and hid it with the intention of coming back,” excavator Chryssoula Saatsoglou-Paliadeli told The Associated Press. “It probably belonged to a high-ranking person.”

The “impressively large” copper vessel contained a cylindrical golden jar with a lid, with the gold wreath of oak leaves and the bones inside. “The young workman who saw it was astounded and shouted ‘land mine!’” the university statement said. Saatsoglou-Paliadeli, a professor of archaeology at the university, said the find probably dates to the 4th century B.C., during which Philip and Alexander reigned.

“Archaeologists must explain why such a group … was found outside the extensive royal cemetery,” the university statement said. “(They must also) work out why the bones of the unknown — but by no means insignificant — person were hidden in the city’s most public and sacred area.”

College students have been waiting with bated breath to hear what the outcome will be of the Amethyst Initiative and which way it will lead. For those of you out of the loop - the Amethyst Initiative is a proposal from 128 leaders of universities who believe that the drinking age should be lowered to from 18 to 21 and have been trying to get their point across.

Led by former Middlebury College President John McCardell, the signers hail from schools as far-flung as Pomona, Tufts, Dartmouth, Duke and Ohio State, as well as from dozens of smaller regional schools. Their argument is a tactful recognition of the law of unintended consequences. Their bottom line: The current national drinking age of 21, raised from age 18 in some states in 1984, “isn’t working.”

They say that legally restricting alcohol consumption among most college-age students hasn’t stopped such drinking - it has only driven it underground. Binge drinking on campus now claims 1,700 lives a year, and university efforts to crack down are largely ineffective. Banning kegs just means that kids make use of more easily concealed and trafficked cans and bottles. Hard-partying fraternities don’t stop their activities; they are just chased away from campus and set up shop nearby, or move off-campus on their own.

On the Amethyst Initiative’s Web site, some college presidents post the reasons they signed the petition. David C. Joyce of Ripon College writes: “It is ludicrous that we can send young men and women to war, but they can’t legally drink a beer.” Donald Eastman of Eckerd College calls the current law “hypocritical, ineffective, guilt-inducing and counterproductive.” David Oxtoby of Pomona notes that “treating college students as adults will help them to make more responsible decisions.”

MADD’s Laura Dean-Mooney insists: “Parents should think twice before sending their teens to these colleges or any others that have waved the white flag on underage and binge drinking policies.” MADD has been pushing hard for people who have signed to remove their names. They have been using the public and the media to show their cause and it looks as if it is working. Kendall Blanchard - the president of Georgia Southwestern State Univeristy removed his name and said that the effort will be used to “turn our schools into party schools”. Robert Franklin of Atlanta’s Morehouse College also withdrew his name.

Marc Quinn is a British sculptor and an apparently an avid fan of Kate Moss. How do we know? I think it was the 110 pound, $2.8 million solid gold statue that he made of her that clued us in. This beautiful statue of a beautiful model is being dubbed as one of the greatest creation’s that we have seen since the ancient Egypt.

This isn’t the firs time that Quinn has used Moss as his muse. In 2006 he created a bronze statue of her in a yoga pose that is more then a little provocative and called it the Sphinx. He has called the newest statue the Siren.

The British Museum is now home to the new statue - which they have only released pictures of her face. That is because she is once again in a very sensual yoga position. “I thought the next thing to do would be to make a sculpture of the person who’s the ideal beauty of the moment,” Quinn said of his fabulously excessive creation. “But even Kate Moss doesn’t live up to the image.”

The British public will be able to determine for itself whether the statue succeeds where Moss apparently failed, with the objet d’art going on display in the same British Museum gallery that houses the institution’s ancient Greek sculpture collection. The statue will be on display from Oct. 4 through Jan. 25.

Fay has passed over and left some cities in utter ruin due to its high winds and heavy rain - which touched certain parts of Florida and Georgia. The next tropcial storm to take form is Gustav - which at this time is building up strength and headed for a course straight into the Gulf of Mexico. Officials in Louisiana and Mississippi are preparing early for the disaster that could strike as soon as next week and are setting parts of the state on high alert.

Earlier this week Gustav was unleashing hurricane force winds and heavy rain on both Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Gustav was 80 miles off the coast of the eastern part of Jamaica today and every hour it is picking up speed. Forecasters have stated that the storm have wind of 70 mph and could reach 111 mph (category 3 speed) as it makes its way to the Gulf.

Emergency officials in Mississippi warned of evacuations, as residents flocked to stores to stock up on gas, power generators and other supplies. Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana declared a state of emergency and prepared hundreds of buses and emergency shelters to help residents flee should Gustav strike as expected on Tuesday.

Mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans has already returned from the Democratic Convention in Denver to help his city prepare. And Mr. Jindal said he was ready to cancel his upcoming plans to attend the Republican Convention in Minneapolis, where he is scheduled to speak on Tuesday night, immediately after Sen. John McCain’s wife, Cindy, and just before the vice presidential nominee.

“My first responsibility is here in Louisiana,” he said at a news conference on Wednesday. “As long as the hurricane has Louisiana in its sights, this is where I’ll be. We’re still hopeful that the storm will miss us, but we’ve got to prepare as if it’s coming our way.”

Concern that the storm might wreak havoc in the Gulf prompted the evacuation of oil platforms and sent oil prices higher. One of the world’s largest offshore drillers, Transocean, evacuated 1,600 workers from its rigs in the Gulf, while Royal Dutch Shell PLC pulled nearly 400 people from its rigs.

If any one of us were to win the lottery we would all try to use that money to purchase the things that we have always wanted. On top of my list would be my bills that I have been spending five years to pay off. Then I would think of the perfect car, house, and other misc products that I could spend the money on. It is rare that we see someone give their money to those who truly need it.

A man who won $3 million from a scratch off lottery ticket chose to give the whole sum of money to his church. Pastor Bertrand Crabbe of the True North Community Church of Port Jefferson said the donor, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “This was why God put the ticket in his hands.”

The state Lottery announced that the independent Christian church will get at least US$102,225 a year through the year 2028. The amount could be higher if withheld taxes are refunded because of the church’s nonprofit status.

A young woman is now recovering after she was stranded for five days in a raving in North Caroline. The ravine covered her and the pick-up truck that she was in from rescuers. The police said that 21 year old Amber Pennell was discovered Monday night among the wreckage in the trees at the bottom the ravine - which was 100 feet deep.

Her husband Mitchell Pennell said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” that Amber told him she clung to life for the sake of their two young children. He said surgeons put a rod in his wife’s broken leg and that she would be fine despite a broken arm, skull fracture and other injuries.

Emergency officials said workers used ropes to lower themselves into the ravine and worked 30 to 45 minutes to cut her free. Pennell had gone without food or water for five days in the wreckage.
